‘The Wire’ Actor Bobby J. Brown Dies at 62 After Barn Fire

Veteran character actor Bobby J. Brown, known for portraying Baltimore police officer Bobby Brown on HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire, has died at age 62, his family and medical authorities confirmed Friday. Brown’s death followed injuries sustained in a barn fire at his Maryland home on Tuesday, according to statements from his daughter and the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Brown died of smoke inhalation and diffuse thermal injury, with the manner of death officially ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office told several outlets. His daughter told TMZ that he was caught in the blaze after entering a barn to jump-start a vehicle; he later called for a fire extinguisher before flames spread rapidly.

Officials with the Maryland State Fire Marshal noted in a press release that first responders found the barn fully engulfed when they arrived late Tuesday night. A family member assisting Brown suffered burn injuries and was taken to hospital, authorities said.

Brown’s acting career spanned decades, with his most widely recognized role as Officer Bobby Brown across multiple seasons of The Wire, which aired from 2002 to 2008. He also appeared in series including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Corner and We Own This City.

Born in Washington, D.C., Brown began his professional life as a Golden Gloves boxing champion before training in drama and moving into film and television. His grounded screen presence earned him respect among peers and audiences alike.

His talent agent, Albert Bramante, confirmed Brown’s passing in a statement and highlighted his authenticity and dedication to his craft. Funeral arrangements are being planned, family members said.

The situation marks a significant loss for the entertainment community, particularly among those connected to the critically praised world of The Wire.
