Los Angeles, United States– Nintendo revealed new details for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the long-awaited sequel to its quirky social simulation franchise, during a dedicated Nintendo Direct on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The company confirmed that the game will launch worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on April 16, 2026, with compatibility on the Nintendo Switch 2 console, according to Nintendo’s official announcement and Direct presentation.
The 20-minute Direct showcased features of the third installment in the Tomodachi series, the first new entry in over a decade. Nintendo said players will inhabit a vibrant island as they create and customize Mii characters—assigning personalities, quirks, and living spaces—and observe their lives and interactions in real time.
The game builds on the foundation of earlier titles in the series, first launched on Nintendo DS and later on the 3DS, which focused on the everyday interactions of Mii characters under the player’s guidance. Nintendo emphasized more direct control over character interactions in Living the Dream compared with its predecessors.
During the Direct, Nintendo also highlighted expanded customization options and island mechanics that allow players to shepherd their Miis through a range of activities and social moments. The presentation underscored the island’s dynamic environment where characters can be nudged to reveal thoughts, resolve personal problems, grow friendships, and pursue their own in-game lives.
The announcement ends months of anticipation following the initial reveal of the sequel in March 2025 and a subsequent fall showcase that outlined gameplay fundamentals. The April release date positions Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream as one of Nintendo’s spring highlights for the Switch platform.
